The 2001 Daytona 500 was the first race of the 2001 NASCAR Winston Cup Series season. The race was on February 18, 2001 at Daytona International Speedway. The Pole award was won by Bill Elliott of Evernham Motorsports with a 49.029 time and a 183.565 speed. The Dual 1 Winner was Sterling Marlin and the Dual 2 Winner was Mike Skinner. The driver that lead the most laps was Ward Burton with 53. The winner was first time winner Michael Waltrip of Dale Earnhardt Inc. The distance was 200 laps and 500 miles. The average speedway was 161.783 MPH. A 18 car crash happened on the backstretch on lap 173. Seven time Winston Cup champ and 1998 Daytona champ Dale Earnhardt Sr died on the last lap of the race from a basilar skull fracture. Sterling Marlin hit the bumber of Dale's car and sent him head on into the wall and hit by Ken Schrader. Dale Earnhardt would always be remembered.
